A Unique Retail Experience

Scraps & Skeins
We are a creative reuse shop operating under the umbrella of Strawberry Fields, a nonprofit organization that supports people with disabilities. We proudly employ people with mental health diagnoses.
Our motto, "reuse is a beautiful" is inspired by our mission of saving reusable textiles from the landfill. We provide knitters and quilters with an outlet to pass on overflow materials, allowing us to offer the community fabric, yarn, and other sewing supplies at an affordable price.

Our Story

The
"Founding Mothers"
In the summer 2014, a small group of women gathered to mull over the idea of creating a creative reuse shop with the mission of developing employment opportunities for adults in recovery of mental illness. With the blessing of the Board of Directors of Strawberry Fields, our “founding mothers” began the story and store that is Scraps & Skeins.

Reuse is Beautiful
Clinging to the vision, these inaugural volunteers recruited more volunteers and solicited donations from the open-hearted needlewomen of Centre County. After testing the idea at a few craft fairs, we officially opened our doors in January 2015. Over the nine years, Scraps & Skeins has grown from a single showroom and storeroom into the six-room shop and workspace we now occupy behind Strawberry Fields’ administrative office. Still powered by a dedicated cadre of volunteers and supported by our devoted customers, Scraps & Skeins now employs a store manager and multiple employees for whom these jobs mean everything.
We believe in the power of creativity. We believe reuse is beautiful. And most of all, we believe that offering employment to an underemployed segment of our community is transformational.
